Here Comes the Bride

Ooft.  Yesterday was what we call a ‘belter’ of a day.  I have obligatory sunburn, but it’s not too bad (a wee rosy forearm; a wee scarlet shoulder…)

It’s June, summer finally seems to be arising from its 10 month slumber, and the next Camp Nano isn’t far away.  I think I’ll participate to give me a break from my current project.  What will I be writing?  NO IDEA!  I’ll worry about it in July.  Until then, I’ll be working on my Edinburgh MS.  I’m still consuming Scottish history and literature like a gannet.

Wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beastie,

O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!

These are the only two lines I remember from reciting To a Mouse at Primary school.  If anyone is interested in Rabbie Burns, then head to this site for a full list of his works – http://www.robertburns.org/works/  Wikipedia also has English translations for those not familiar with the Scots language ;)

I’m truly sorry man’s dominion,

Has broken nature’s social union,

An’ justifies that ill opinion,

Which makes thee startle

At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,

An’ fellow mortal!

Think of this the next time a wee mousie scurries past…

Shifting forward a century or two, Twitter this week was filled with one big story: Game of Thrones, and that chapter (I suggest you look away now if you haven’t read the book or watched the show!)

Some of the reactions on Twitter were hilarious!  For a pick of the best, have a look at http://mashable.com/2013/06/03/red-wedding-game-of-thrones/  I’ve not actually seen The Episode, but I’ve read the books.  I guess it would have been more shocking on tv than on page (and on page was bad enough!)  Look on the #got hashtag for some top entertainment (especially if you’re one of those smug people who knew what was coming).

As upsetting as it can be, sometimes you need to kill your characters.  If readers think ‘Ock, it’s okay, they’re all going to survive’, then they’ll experience little nerves or threat.  When I read a book, I want to be worried about the characters – I don’t want to know they all live happily ever after.  Where would be the fun in that?  When I read Game of Thrones, I’m genuinely scared when my favourite characters go into battle (or, um, attend weddings);  I’m living the drama with them.

Mind you, I also don’t care for needless slaughter.  I require a satisfactory ending.  If I’ve invested in characters, I want a good return.

Mr Martin – I’ve put my faith in you!  Don’t let me down!

On a final note, I’m going to a wedding on Saturday.  If I never post again, well… you’ll know what happened.
